Kybella : Hot enough to melt fat?
Kybella is a new FDA approved injectable medication that can melt fat in the submental, or double chin, area. Kybella is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown of a patient’s dietary fat. Kybella is injected into the submental area (fat below the chin), which allows the medicine to rupture the cell membrane of the adipose, or fat, cells. It represents a nonsurgical option for patients who have a double chin and don’t want any surgical intervention.
Kybella is injected once a month for approximately 6 months. There can be mild bruising and swelling primarily associated with the injections. Results take 4-6 months to be realized.
This medication is ideal for individuals with a double chin or neck heaviness but with very little to no excess skin. This would be offered to individuals under the age of 45 or to those who wish to have fat dissolved under the chin with Kybella but are not bothered by the banding or excess skin.
Alternative for individuals with a double chin include neck liposuction, ThermiRF, nonsurgical necklift with Radiesse, Restylane Lyft, or Voluma, Botox nonsurgical necklift, or fractional CO2 laser resurfacing. These alternatives are not for every patient and visiting with a qualified facial plastic surgeon is ideal. For more information, visit www.northsideplasticsurgery.com.
