Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation
Fat transfer breast augmentation, technically termed autologous breast augmentation, is a type of breast augmentation that uses liposuction to remove fat from other areas of your body which are then carefully transferred to the breasts to increase size. The procedure has an added benefit – another area of your body is slimmed when the fat cells are harvested for breast augmentation.
What is a fat transfer breast augmentation?
Fat transfer breast augmentation in Atlanta is a procedure that uses fat removed with custom liposuction from other areas of your body to bring added volume to your breasts. This can include transferring fat cells from troublesome areas such as the tummy, hips, thighs, or buttocks.

What can I expect from a fat transfer breast augmentation?
Before your Alpharetta fat transfer breast augmentation procedure, our plastic surgeon will carefully mark the areas where fat is to be harvested with liposuction. The procedure is performed with local anesthesia or twilight sedation, or in some cases, general anesthesia if you are having several enhancement procedures. Once anesthetized, our plastic surgeon will gently harvest fat cells from the marked areas with a small cannula (thin, hollow needle).
Once the fat cells have been harvested, they will be separated, purified, and prepared for injection into your breast tissue. Using multiple injections, the fat cells are gently injected into the breasts to ensure a smooth and even breast shape.
What is recovery like?
After your fat transfer breast augmentation, we will apply bandages and a compression garment to minimize swelling and promote healing. You are free to return home and rest after your procedure. You will be provided with detailed instructions for aftercare and what to expect as you heal.
While there may be some pain, bruising and swelling, it can be managed with oral medication and should subside within a week. Wear the compression garment continuously, day and night. Most women return to work or other activities within two to three days. You will be required to sleep on your back during your recovery, so the maximum number of transferred cells flourish in the new location. While you may return to normal activity quickly, strenuous activity will need to be avoided for at least two weeks.
Am I a good candidate for a fat transfer?
You are an ideal candidate for a breast fat transfer if you are looking for a procedure that can both remove excess fat from a body area with an excess and add subtle volume to your breasts. If you have a very slim body with very limited fat, you are likely not a good candidate.
You are also a good candidate for fat transfer breast augmentation if you have an uneven breast size, a depression left from a lumpectomy, or a deeper scar. The procedure is a natural way to add volume, as the fat cells become part of your breasts for the long term. While a breast fat transfer procedure cannot lift sagging tissue or dramatically increase breast size, it is a fantastic option for those who are looking for added volume without the use of implants. You can expect about one bra size increase. If you want more, you can undergo an additional fat transfer procedure later.
Fat transfer breast augmentation FAQs
Where does the fat come from to transfer to my breast?
When removing fat via liposuction for an autologous breast augmentation, there are several classic problem areas that your doctor may recommend for harvesting fat cells.
- Abdomen and back
- Inner and outer thighs
- Upper arms
- Back (bra fat)
When will I see results?
You will see the results visible immediately, but a percentage of the injected fat cells will not survive the transfer, so more will be injected than you need. The results will be achieved in about two months, although slight changes could occur for up to six months.
