Dysport or Botox or Xeomin: What is the difference?
Botulinum Toxin type A now comes in 3 forms: Xeomin, Dysport or Botox. The active ingredient is exactly the same in each but the preservatives are a bit different. Because the active ingredient is the same, the results should be the same; however, some people feel that Dysport or Xeomin provides a more natural, softer look and others feel that Botox does. The difference in results among different people may be because of the different preservatives in the products. Xeomin is the purest form of the active ingredient.
In our practice, Botox still seems to work best for lines between the eyebrows, in the neck, and for individuals with headaches or migraines. Dysport does seem to provide a softer, more natural look, in my opinion, and though there’s scientific evidence that Dysport may work slightly better in the forehead and in the crow’s feet areas, I haven’t seen a difference in clinical practice. They are both great products that have a similar longevity and provide similar results. Because natural results are our niche, I prefer Dysport slightly more only for this reason.
We use Xeomin, instead of Dysport or Botox, in individuals who feel Dysport or Botox are just not working very well for them anymore. Xeomin tends to last closer to 8 weeks instead of 12 weeks as with Dysport or Botox, probably because there are fewer preservatives. Xeomin is great for someone who wants an improvement for an event or a couple of months (such as around the holidays) and wants to keep the cost down but doesn’t plan on continuing the use of a neuromodulator. In an ideal world, maintenance is very important to keep the forehead, eyebrow, and crow’s feet lines at bay, but more importantly, these agents keep the brow from descending over time helping to avoid a tired look as we get older.
Dysport or Botox or Xeomin?…this will always be a question for most patients. How do you decide? I tell my patients they are like Coke or Pepsi…try them all and decide which one you like the most. We’ll be happy to place it in the appropriate areas for you!
