Meet the Doctor
Dr. Mike Majmundar’s practice is unique in that it focuses exclusively on plastic surgery of the face, head and neck. As a double board certified facial plastic surgeon, his complete approach to facial aesthetics promotes healthy skin, youthful contours, and natural results, without appearing “done” or artificial.
Ear Shaping / Otoplasty Atlanta
Dr. Mike Majmundar, double board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, performs ear shaping for the residents of Atlanta, Sandy Springs and the surrounding communities in Georgia.
Children subject to cruel nicknames such as “Dumbo” or “Mickey Mouse” are most likely candidates for otoplasty, but this surgery can be performed at any age once the ears have reached full size (five to six years of age). When it comes to otoplasty, conventional wisdom is the earlier the better. While many patients have this procedure done at an early age to avoid ridicule from peers, it is also becoming popular among adults.
Is Otoplasty for You?
Otoplasty will not alter your ability to hear. What is important for successful otoplasty is that the ears be in proportion to the size and shape of the face and head. When considering otoplasty, parents must be confident that they have their child’s best interests at heart. With all facial plastic surgery, a positive attitude toward the surgery is important. It is especially critical when the patient is a child or adolescent.
A consultation with a facial plastic surgeon can help parents to decide what is best for their child, not only aesthetically, but also psychologically and physically. Timing is always an important consideration. Having the procedure done at a young age is highly desirable in two respects: the cartilage is extremely pliable, thereby permitting greater ease of shaping; and secondly, the child will experience psychological benefits from the cosmetic improvement.
Making the Decision for Otoplasty
During your consultation, Dr. Majmundar will examine the structure of the ears and discuss possibilities for correction. Even if only one ear needs “pinned back,” surgery will probably be recommended on both to achieve the most natural, symmetrical appearance.
Following a thorough medical history review, Dr. Majmundar will explain the kind of anesthesia required, surgical facility and costs. Typically, he will suggest a general anesthesia for young patients, and a local anesthetic combined with a mild sedative for older children and adults.
Understanding the Surgery
Surgery begins with an incision behind the ear in the natural fold where the ear joins the head. The necessary amounts of cartilage and skin required to achieve the right effect are removed. In some cases, the cartilage will be trimmed and shaped into a more desirable form and then pinned back with permanent sutures.
What to Expect After the Surgery
Soft dressings applied to the ears will remain in place for 24 hours. You will be asked to wear a headband at night for 7 to 10 days to allow the ears to properly heal. Most patients experience some mild discomfort. You must sleep on your back for 10 to 14 days because no pressure can be put on the ears.
Surgery: In-Office or Outpatient
Anesthesia: General or IV sedation
Procedure Length: 1- 1 1/2 hours (for both sides)
