It might be surprising to learn that many people consider chin implant procedures after initially consulting a plastic surgeon about their nose.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s true that the nose occupies center-stage on a person\u2019s face, a careful analysis sometimes concludes that improving the chin can do as much or more to make a person\u2019s overall appearance harmonious and pleasing.<\/p>\n

One of Those Features with Meaning<\/h3>\n

It is easy to overstate this, but it\u2019s worth a try: Some facial features carry meaning. The mouth or lips, for example, can communicate generosity, openness and liveliness. In a similar sense, the chin frankly is a focus of strength \u2013 or not. Now these are subjective statements, but most any Hollywood makeup artist would probably agree with them when given the task of creating a character. And experienced, board-certified facial plastic surgeons often come to the same conclusions, either consciously or unconsciously, after years of working at the corner of Art and Science.<\/p>\n

Fundamental, But Not Unchanging<\/h3>\n

Even though the chin is so fundamental to the overall impression of the face, it is less often considered for plastic surgery than some other features. Implicitly, there appears to be a widespread idea that the chin is less changeable.<\/p>\n

In fact, the chin does change \u2013 or appear to change \u2013 over the course of a person\u2019s life. The surrounding tissue often is the source of this change. The fat that is naturally under the skin or below the chin can increase, or the volume of the skin\u2019s surface can decrease through loss of collagen, or the skin itself can become slack from its lifelong relationship with gravity. All these surrounding factors can cause the chin to appear different as life goes on.<\/p>\n

In other cases, the chin we\u2019re born with just may not be saying what we want to say about the person behind it. A receding profile at the chin might imply weakness or uncertainty, or just not match the rest of the person\u2019s profile.<\/p>\n

The Procedure Itself: Straightforward<\/h3>\n

As solid and fundamental as the chin may appear, enhancing it\u2019s profile does not require more work, or deeper work, than many other plastic surgery procedures.<\/p>\n
