Medical Micro Needling in Atlanta
Micro needling has been used for hundreds of years to create microscopic wounds that stimulate production of collagen and elastin support tissue and enhance penetration of beneficial active ingredients. The tools have changed over the years from a stamp-type device to a roller device and now to an electronic device which gives absolute precision of needle depth. Medical micro needling, as a cosmetic treatment, is used to improve skin tone and texture, while as a medical treatment is used to improve scarring and deeper damage in the skin.
Medical Micro needling creates microscopic wounds that are deeper than those used for cosmetic treatments since scars occur secondary to a deeper injury. The device ‘punches out’ microscopic portions of the scar using the micro needles which in turn stimulates a healing cascade that recruits new collagen to the area helping to tighten and smooth the skin in the area of the scar. Because it takes our bodies at least 10-12 weeks to create the new collagen, the results are not readily apparent until after the third treatment. Most individuals need 5 treatments for a good result but several patients continue the treatments beyond this after they see the results for themselves. Scars such as those from previous surgery, trauma, and acne respond well. Even treatment of hypertrophic scars have shown good results with 5 or more treatments.
This is a great option for individuals with darker skin types, such as asians, hispanics, and african americans, as facial scars cannot be easily treated with lasers, dermabrasion, or deeper peels because of the risk of scarring and hyperpigmentation with these modalities. Medical Micro needling for darker skin types gives us an option to help these individual attain smoother skin without the risks mentioned above. It can also be combined with superficial fillers to treat a depressed scar, as well as subcision and excision of deeper or wide scars for a greater improvement.
To obtain a better result, we combine the medical micro needling procedure with stem cell growth factors at the time of needling to increase penetration of these growth factors into the skin. The stem cell cytokines or growth factors create a more ‘youthful’ environment for the skin cells after medical micro needling and during the healing process allowing a smoother, healthier result. The stem cell growth factors can be used for cosmetic purposes as well creating a high end medical facial which we call the BioStem Cell Facial. The growth factors are safe for darker skin types as well.
Visual improvements for cosmetic purposes generally appear after 2 weeks with continued improvements for several months. Three to five sessions every 4 to 6 weeks are recommended depending on the condition (s) being treated, with medical indications requiring a greater number of treatments. Most patients have some redness for 2-6 hours after treatment but can return to work the next day. As a result, medical micro needling is considered a no downtime procedure, even when used as a BioStem Cell Facial.
