Skin Resurfacing
Premature aging is more common now than ever before. Unfortunately, our frequent and sometimes purposeful exposure to the sun has taken its toll on our skin. The demand, among both men and women, to reverse the signs of sun damage is at an all time high.
Many patients have tried non-prescription skin products before they consult a facial skin specialist such as Dr. Majmundar. Skin resurfacing cannot produce perfect skin; however, even if you have never taken care of your skin, it can provide dramatic improvement in the skin's appearance. On the other hand, daily skin care, especially sun protection, maximizes your results and prevents further damage.
The choice of procedure is based on the type of skin damage, skin color, skin type, ethnic background, and your age.
Chemical Peels
The 4 basic categories are: very superficial, superficial, medium-depth, and deep peels.
Very superficial peels, known as facials, are commonly found in day spas and med spas.
Superficial peels have little to no downtime and are commonly referred to as "lunchtime peels". We offer only medical grade superficial peels that improve overall skin tone, texture, and vibrancy. These are ideal skin enhancing treatments for busy individuals who cannot afford the downtime of deeper skin resurfacing techniques, such as laser resurfacing or dermabrasion, but still want to improve their overall skin health and appearance. As an excellent exfoliant, they help soften fine lines, remove brown spots, and control break outs and acne. Even after a single treatment, patients realize an improvement; however, continued treatments on a monthly basis for a minimum of 4-6 months provide the greatest results. These popular peels are a great addition to any skin care regimen and can be performed on any skin type including sensitive or dark skin with minimal downtime and tangible results.
Medium-depth peels require mild sedation and are performed as a single procedure. For individuals with sun damaged skin, brown spots, fine to mild lines and wrinkles, and coarse skin, medium depth peels provide an excellent option for a fresh start with newer, healthier skin. It also helps individuals who have precancerous skin lesions or recurrent skin cancers. Downtime ranges between 4-7 days and the treatment can be repeated every 6-12 months.
Deep peels require more sedation and have 10-14 days of downtime followed by several weeks of mild redness that can be covered with makeup. They work well for moderate to severe wrinkling, severe sun damage and brown spots, and very coarse skin. Because newer technology, such as laser resurfacing, provides similar results with less downtime, few patients undergo this procedure.
Dermabrasion
Unlike microdermabrasion which is performed in many spas as a superifical mechanical exfoliator, dermabrasion uses a rotating brush to go slightly deeper to remove the top layers of skin either under local anesthesia or IV sedation. Dermabrasion works very well for smoothing out lines around the mouth (lipstick lines) and chin as well as smoothing out acne scars and traumatic scars. It can also be used over the entire face to reduce lines and wrinkles as an excellent resurfacing technique. Downtime averages between 7 - 10 days followed by a fresh rosy complexion for 1-2 weeks which can very easily be covered by makeup.
Laser Resurfacing
Laser resurfacing helps reduce moderate to severe wrinkling over the entire face helping to tighten underlying collagen, remove blemishes and brown spots, and smooth coarse skin without making an incision. This treatment truly provides the patient with a completely fresh start with younger, tighter skin. It is performed with IV sedation and the downtime lasts 7-10 days followed by a fresh rosy complexion for 4-6 weeks afterwards which can easily be covered with makeup. (TOP)
