Caring for the uncared – Mission Guatemala (May 25-28, 2012)
Over 56% of the population in Guatemala live in poverty and half of them earn less than $2 a day. Dr. Mike Majmundar, our double board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon, headed to this Central American country for a surgical mission with ‘Flying Doctors of America’ to help children with cleft lip, cleft palate, facial burn injuries, and birth defects. The medical team volunteered in the city of Coban in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, which is one of the most impoverished areas of this beautiful country. Dr. Mike Majmundar and his team performed 24 surgeries, mostly cleft lip and palate surgeries in children, working 13 hours a day for three consecutive days. It was an exhausting but very humbling 3 days and they hope to return with more equipment and supplies to treat many others who need their help.
